What are All-on-4 Dental Implants?
What are All-on-4 Dental Implants?
All-on-4 dental implants are designed to replace an entire row of teeth.
1
The all-on-4 teeth are termed “fixed” because they cannot be removed by the patient; only a dentist can detach them. Also known as Fixed Implant Bridges, they provide a stable and permanent solution for tooth replacement.
2
With advancements in dental technology, particularly in the development of dental implants, we can now attach durable prosthetic teeth to implants. This innovation has significantly improved patient comfort and satisfaction.
Teeth can be lost due to various reasons such as gum disease, tooth decay, injury, or other dental issues. Before dental implants were available, traditional dentures relied on minimal suction to stay in place. For added security, some people often resort to using adhesive pastes. However, these methods frequently lead to discomfort and instability, causing frustration and pain.

Tooth loss can cause significant discomfort and impact your confidence. Among the common solutions for complete tooth loss are removable dentures and all- on-4 dental implants, each with its own set of benefits and drawbacks. It is essential to understand these differences to choose the option that best suits your individual requirements.
All-on-4 dental implants, have emerged as the leading choice globally for individuals missing all their teeth.
Types of All-on-4 Implants
1
Full Fixed Bridge Supported On 4 Implants
Artificial Teeth are securely held in place by four dental implants inserted into the upper or lower jaw. Designed to sit snugly against the gums, it can be maintained with regular brushing and the use of floss threaders to clean the space between the artificial teeth and gums.
2
Full Fixed Bridge Supported On 6 Implants
Attached to six implants in the upper or lower jaw, this solution provides exceptional strength and stability. The artificial teeth are removable only by a dentist and can be customised to match the shade of your natural teeth for a seamless appearance.
3
Wide Range of Material Choices for Full Fixed Bridges
At The Smiles Studio, we offer a variety of materials for full fixed bridges. Choose from metal with acrylic for strength and cost-effectiveness, or Zirconia and ceramic for superior aesthetics and durability. We also provide milled metal bars with Zirconia and ceramic for a blend of support and natural appearance. For a modern solution, opt for PEEK (polyether ether ketone) frameworks with individual ceramic crowns. Each option ensures functionality and a natural-looking smile.
Pros & Cons
of
All-On-4 Implants
Pros
- Stability and Functionality: All-on-4 dental implants allow you to talk, chew and bite confidently, without worrying about them shifting or coming loose.
- Improved Aesthetics: Customised to match the colour and shape of your natural teeth, all-on-4 dental implants provide a more natural look compared to removable options.
- Stain Resistance: They are less prone to staining compared to removable acrylic dentures.
- Reduced Bone Shrinkage: They help maintain facial structure and prevent the sunken appearance often seen with removable dentures.
- Enhanced Comfort: Unlike removable dentures, all-on-4 implants do not rest on the gums, making them more comfortable.
- No more sticky denture adhesive: Since they’re screwed in place, you no longer need adhesives to help hold them in.
- No Sore Spots: They avoid the irritation and sore spots that can come with traditional dentures, allowing for a more natural and comfortable experience.
- Secure and Durable: All-on-4 implants do not come out and are less likely to break or lose teeth compared to conventional dentures.
- Longevity: Designed as a long-term solution, all-on-4 dental implants can last a lifetime with proper care, unlike removable dentures that often require replacements or adjustments.
Cons
- Higher Cost: All-on-4 dental implants are more expensive than traditional removable options.
- Surgical Procedure Required: Implant placement for all-on-4 dental implants involves surgery.
Pros & Cons
of
Removable Dentures
Pros
- Lower Cost: Removable dentures are generally more affordable than fixed alternatives.
- No Surgical Procedure: They do not require surgery for placement.
Cons
- Stability Concerns: A major downside of removable dentures is their tendency to slip or become loose during eating or speaking, leading to discomfort and potential embarrassment.
- Gum and Bone Loss: Over time, removable dentures can accelerate the breakdown of gum tissue and underlying bone, which can change the facial structure and necessitate adjustments or replacements.
- Reduced Chewing Efficiency: Their lack of stability can impair your ability to chew effectively, possibly leading to dietary limitations and digestive issues.
- Comfort Issues: Because they sit directly on the gums, removable dentures often cause more discomfort than fixed options.
- Need for Adhesives: To stay in place, especially for those with dry mouth conditions, removable dentures often require adhesives, which can be messy and inconvenient.
- Sore Spots: Frequent rubbing against the gums can cause sore spots, requiring either enduring the discomfort, going without the dentures periodically, or making more frequent visits to the dentist for adjustments.
- Fit Changes Over Time: As the jawbone continues to shrink after tooth loss, dentures can become loose and fit poorly, leading to more dental appointments for adjustment/new dentures.
- Removal for Cleaning: Many find it inconvenient to have to remove dentures for cleaning.
- Food Trapping: Food can easily get stuck under removable dentures, necessitating removal and cleaning after meals to ensure comfort.
- Shorter Lifespan: Removable dentures are less durable than fixed options and tend to wear out faster.
- Easier Staining: Made from materials that are more prone to discolouration, removable dentures stain more easily compared to all-on-4 dental implant bridges.

Pat
The best thing I ever did for myself was to make the decision to have my dental implants 6 years ago. Mahesh Nagpal changed my smile and I will forever be grateful. With 5 implants and excellent ongoing care and advice I regained my smile, confidence and optimism.
Roger
Fear of the dentist? I went through the apprehension and stress for absolutely no reason. After local anesthetic, I felt absolutely no pain. After surgery,I didn’t take a single painkiller. Not because I’m brave, I just had no pain. Amazing. I’m only sorry I suffered the stupid dentures for so long instead of going to the Smile Studio sooner.
Miss S
I had 2 implants placed to secure my dentures firmly in place and this has worked out really well. I would not hesitate to recommend your services, both for technical excellence and your kind and patient care. For the first time I can say it was a pleasure to visit the Dentist.

FAQs about All-on-4 Dental Implants
1. Why Opt for All-on-4 Implants Instead of Removable Dentures?
In short, stability. All-on-4 implants offer a secure and comfortable solution, allowing you to eat and speak with ease, without the concern of them shifting or loosening over time. They also conduct heat better than removable dentures, enhancing your ability to sense food temperatures.
All-on-4 dental implants mimic the feel and function of natural teeth, making their care routine straightforward. You can brush them as you would your natural teeth and use water flossers or Waterpiks to clean underneath, TePes, similar to traditional bridgework. Many people feel more self-assured with All-on-4 implants because they look and act like real teeth, eliminating persistent dental worries and boosting confidence.
2. How Can I Determine If Full Mouth Implants Are Suitable for Me?
To find out if full mouth implants are the right option, you should consult with one of our experienced dentists. We will assess your suitability and help you weigh the benefits and considerations specific to your case.
3. Am I a Good Candidate for Full Mouth Dental Implants?
If you have lost teeth or suffer from significant tooth decay, we invite you for a complimentary consultation. We will explore all available options and assist you in choosing the best solution for your oral health and overall well-being.
4. What Is the Treatment Process Like?
1) Initial Assessment: During the initial consultation, we will evaluate your oral health, take X-rays, and discuss the feasibility of the procedure. Factors like bone density, overall health, and oral hygiene are taken into consideration. Sometimes a CT scan is required. We’ll discuss different treatment options and decide which option best suits your individual needs and desires.
2) Records of your mouth: We take photos, jaw measurements, etc. to plan fabrication of your temporary prosthesis. We’ll review all your questions ahead of time, supply you with the necessary prescriptions, post-op instructions and schedule your surgery.
3) Implant Placement: In this step, we will do any necessary extractions and place the implants that same day when possible (possible in most cases) and deliver your temporary teeth. This procedure is usually performed using local anesthesia and/or sedation. The implants are then left to heal and fuse with the bone over a period of a few months. Meanwhile, you’ll have your temporary teeth.
4) Abutment placement: Sometimes the abutments (connector pieces between the implant and the bridge/denture) are placed at the time of surgery, and sometimes, if the implants are not tight enough that day to support biting forces, they’re placed at the following appointment, a few months later. (This variable will determine whether your temporary teeth characterisationswill be fixed or removable.)
5) Give them time to heal: Once full osseointegration is complete and the implants are solidly integrated to the jawbone, the final impressions are made, and we begin fabricating your final prosthesis. This is when we get your input on smile design (tooth shape, shade, characterisations you may want, etc.), and tailor-make your new smile. Once we make that final impression, the case goes to the lab, and we refine your temporary teeth for you to wear until the final prosthesis is finished.
6) Delivery of final teeth. Our cutting-edge technology and our decades of experience allow most patients to get their implants and temporary teeth all in one appointment. For most patients, in just a few hours, existing teeth are removed, implants placed and fixed temporary teeth are placed all in the same visit. Imagine the transformation and joy for those patients who have suffered with missing, painful, or ugly teeth for many years who look in a mirror for the first time and see their perfect smile!
All dental implants require a period of healing to be ready for the permanent zirconia or titanium/acrylic teeth to be fabricated. The temporaries not only keep you from going without teeth during this healing period, they also provide us with a road map for designing and making your permanent teeth. By comparing what we like and don’t like about the temporaries, we can fine-tune the permanent teeth to the patient’s highest expectations.
5. How To Keep Them Clean?
Because it attaches securely to dental implants in your jawbone, you can’t remove it at home, but your dentist can remove it for maintenance or repair if necessary. Since you can’t take your artificial teeth out to clean them, you’ll brush them with a soft toothbrush just like natural teeth, and clean underneath them using water flosses, TePes, water-piks and other special cleaning tools. And stay up to date with periodic cleanings and checkups.
6. What is the cost?
Please refer to our Fees page to ascertain the cost of Fixed Dentures.
7. How Do I Maintain My All-on-4 Implants?
Apart from homecare (see number 5), your dentist can remove the prosthesis for professional cleaning or maintenance if needed. It’s important to keep up with routine dental check-ups and cleanings to maintain their condition.
