If you’ve had missing teeth for a long time, you might have been told you’re not immediately suitable for dental implants due to a breakdown of bone. At The Smiles Studios in Chandler’s Ford & Lymington, our dentists have 30 years of experience and have helped make implants possible for patients with severe bone loss using dental bone grafts.
Rebuild bone, improve stability and make implants possible
Dental bone grafts rebuild lost bone volume, reduce risk, create stronger implant support and improve long-term stability. Our dentists will likely recommend a bone graft before dental implants if we find there’s not enough healthy bone in the jaw to securely support your implants long-term.

Make implants possible again with Dr Nagpal
At The Smiles Studio, we’ve successfully placed over 5,000 dental implants and helped hundreds of patients in complex situations regain eligibility for dental implants.
Using in-house advanced CBCT-guided planning, we can strategically position implants in areas where we can maximise available bone and, where possible, reduce or even avoid the need for grafting, especially in full-mouth cases using innovative systems like All-on-4.

The dental bone graft procedure
- Consultation & Scan: Begin with a free consultation and a 3D CT scan to assess your current bone levels and suitability, and to determine whether grafting is required and the level needed.
- Treatment Plan: If there’s insufficient bone, Dr Nagpal will carefully plan your treatment around your bone anatomy, structure, smile and implant placement.
- The Grafting Procedure: We’ll place the bone graft material into the area with bone loss to rebuild volume where we plan on placing the implant. It’s carried out under local anaesthetic with sedation available for nervous patients. Typically takes around an hour. Simultaneous implant placement is possible in some cases.
- Healing & Integration: Over a few months, we will allow the graft to heal and integrate with your natural bone. Time varies depending on the size of the graft. Typically, timelines take 3-6 months.
- Dental Implant Placement: Once healing is complete, dental implants can be placed into the restored area of the bone. A few months later, once the implant has bonded with the bone, the final crown, bridge, or denture can be placed to complete your smile.

Bone graft for implants FAQs
Why would I need a bone graft before dental implants?
As dental implants are placed directly into the bone in your jaw and rely on a good volume to remain stable long-term, you’ll need enough healthy jawbone for them to be successful.
Does everyone need a bone graft for implants?
No. Many of our past patients have had implants without grafting, especially with innovative full-mouth systems like All-on-4, which are placed at an angle to maximise available bone.
Is a dental bone graft painful at The Smiles Studio?
Treatment is carried out under local anaesthetic, with sedation available for nervous patients at both of The Smiles Studio clinics in Chandler’s Ford & Lymington.
How long does a bone graft take to heal?
Initial recovery usually takes a few weeks, but integration typically takes between 3 and 6 months.
Can implants be placed at the same time as a bone graft?
In some cases, yes. This depends on the amount of readily available bone Dr Nagpal identifies.
What causes jawbone loss?
Bone loss typically occurs after missing teeth go ignored, gum disease develops, denture wear is prolonged, trauma occurs, or infection occurs.
Will a bone graft improve implant success?
Bone grafting helps create stronger support for implants and improves long-term stability.
Are bone grafts safe?
Bone grafting is a well-established and commonly performed procedure in implant dentistry.
What happens if I don’t have enough bone for implants?
Without sufficient bone support, implants may not integrate or remain stable over the long term, leading to loosening or failure.
How do you know if I need a bone graft?
Dr Nagpal uses advanced CT scanning to assess bone levels and density, and to determine implant suitability during your free consultation at The Smiles Studio in Hampshire.
