The sinus lift procedure explained
- Consultation and planning: During the preliminary consultation, X-rays and a CT scan are used to identify areas of insufficient bone and to map vital underlying structures, such as nerves and blood vessels. It will also allow Dr Nagpal to understand which method may be used to elevate the sinus and promote new bone formation. Typically, a bone graft material is also used to support the sinus membrane in its elevated position.
- The procedure itself: This membrane is gently elevated, or "lifted", to create additional space in the jawbone under local anaesthetic. A small incision is made in the gums to expose the underlying bone, and an opening is then carefully made to access the membrane separating your sinus cavities from your jawbone. The newly created space is filled with bone graft material, and the gum is then stitched back into place to heal.
- Recovery: Some side effects are to be expected as you recover from a sinus lift, although any discomfort experienced is often minimal. Common side effects to expect include gum swelling, tenderness, and minor bleeding from the gums or nose.
- Follow-up appointment: Typically, you will have a follow-up appointment a week or so after your surgery, where your dentist will assess your healing progress and remove any stitches that have not yet dissolved.
Treatment timeline
Sinus lift integration usually takes 4-9 months to heal before we can consider placing implants, allowing the bone to adequately integrate into its new position. However, the specific timelines depend on the use of the graft. In some cases, simultaneous implant placement is possible and will be discussed during your consultation.

Sinus lift FAQs
What is a sinus lift?
The sinuses are air-filled cavities situated above the rear section of your upper jaw. They are enclosed by a membrane and are balloon-like in structure, altering shape following tooth loss. This area often poses challenges for dental implant placement due to limited bone volume and its close proximity to the sinus cavities. A sinus lift procedure is designed to elevate the sinus floor, creating new bone space necessary for the successful installation of dental implants.
Why would I need a sinus lift?
If bone loss in the back portion of your jaw is caused by issues like periodontal disease, tooth extractions, or prolonged denture wear, you might lack sufficient bone to support dental implants.
Is a sinus lift painful?
Treatment is carried out under local anaesthetic, with sedation available for nervous patients.
How long does a sinus lift take to heal?
Initial healing usually takes a few weeks, while full bone integration can take between 4-9 months.
Can implants be placed at the same time as a sinus lift?
In some cases, yes, depending on how much existing bone is available.
Will a sinus lift improve implant success?
Creating additional bone support helps improve implant stability, safety, and long-term success.
How do you know if I need a sinus lift?
Dr Nagpal uses advanced CBCT scanning to assess bone height, sinus position and implant suitability during your consultation.
